Play with Your Specialty Stitches: Make a Heart-Filled Valentine!

Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to play, experiment, and have a little fun with your sewing machine’s specialty stitches. So why not stitch up an adorable heart-filled mini quilt? 💕

This quick and creative project lets you explore your machine’s hidden stitch potential, mix and match thread colors, and create something totally unique. Plus, it’s a great way to use up fabric scraps while making a sweet handmade gift (or a little something for yourself!).

Ready to have some fun? Let’s get started!

Step 1: Make Your Quilt Sandwich

Start with a 4”–5” quilt sandwich—just a small square of fabric, batting, and backing. Nothing fancy! This is a play project, so dig into your scrap bin and grab whatever makes you happy.

Step 2: Go Wild with Specialty Stitches

Now, let’s bring out the real magic—your sewing machine’s specialty stitches!

  • Pick a few contrasting threads to make your designs pop.
  • Try different stitch settings—length, width, density—and see what happens.
  • Layer different stitches over each other for extra texture and depth.

There’s no right or wrong way to do this—just play, experiment, and have fun. Your quilt sandwich should be bursting with stitched designs by the time you’re done.

Step 3: Create Your Heart Frame

Now, we’re going to add the heart-shaped cutout that makes this piece extra special.

  • Take another 4”–5” fabric square, the same size as your quilted sandwich.
  • Fuse lightweight fusible web to the back. This will help stabilize the fabric and make the next step easier.
  • Fold the fabric square in half.
  • Trace a heart shape onto the folded edge. I’m using one of Bethanne Nemesh’s Love Lines rulers because, let’s be honest, my freehand hearts always turn out lopsided! But if you love freehand drawing, go for it.
  • Cut out the heart. Save the heart cutout for another project—you’ll only need the outer frame for this one.

Step 4: Fuse & Stitch the Frame

  • Center your heart-shaped fabric frame on top of your quilt sandwich and fuse it in place.
  • Use more specialty stitches to secure the edges! Think of it as another opportunity to play. You could use a satin stitch, decorative motifs, or even free-motion stitching to make it extra fancy.

Step 5: Finish It Off

Decide how you want to finish your edges:

  • Add binding for a polished mini quilt.
  • Use even more specialty stitches for a fun, raw-edge effect.

Either way, your heart-shaped Valentine is ready to show off! 🎉
