Quilt Block Mania is continuing this year with Houses!

There were lots of possibilities here for a quilter. There are house blocks and log cabins, attic windows, and a myriad of traditional designs.

I encourage you to visit these wonderful designers to see what spin they have put on this topic!

I am continuing my individual theme of nutcrackers. Why?

Because I have a collection of nutcrackers and have been itching to turn them into quilt blocks.

Sadly, my physical nutcrackers were packed away with the Christmas ornaments… So, I am finding a way to keep them out all year with quilting!

Quilt Block Mania requires that we use 12″ blocks. However, I want to do something a little different. My blocks are still 12-inches but are easily adapted to 6″ x 12″ blocks.

Of course, you can make the blocks bigger if you really, really like nutcrackers!

You can collect them all year to make a Nutcracker quilt, runner or a bunch of mini-quilts. The use is up to you.

Sticking to the theme of houses, left me in a waffling between gingerbread houses and carpenters. It was tempting to pick the gingerbread houses because they have loads of possibilities for embellishments. But they are a little too Christmas-y for February.

So, I opted for the safer choice of the carpenter. Of course, I could turn his little house into gingerbread. But would that make him more of a baker?

Regardless, this little guy gives you lots of options for trying something a little different. Maybe you have a little metallic fabric for his tools? A bit of faux suede for his apron or hat? Maybe some shimmery fabric for the windows? This is the time to raid your scrap bin and have a little fun.

Stay tuned this month for the details on how I made my block.
