When I first joined a guild, I remember the longarm quilters offering to baste quilts for those who hand-quilted or quilted on their domestic machines. I never really understood why… until I tackled my first big quilt. That’s when I learned that basting my time away was not wasting my time away.

I used large-stitch basting for Quilting… You Say?, a large word collage quilt that has been (wo)manhandled on my domestic machine while I quilt and secure the appliqués at the same time. If I had not spent an afternoon basting, I probably would have alarmed the neighbors with my quilting cussing!

I call that Basting My Time. 😄

Basting My Time is the next in my series of fusible appliqué lettering blocks, and this one has a twist: those big basting stitches are part of the design. Quilt them with a straight stitch, or slow down and do a little hand sewing.
