I am having fun making simple holiday gifts for my friends using this month’s Quilt Block Mania free block. To get the block, sign up for the newsletter! If you already have the block, I am adding to my decorating ideas.
In my last post, I showed the preppy version. Today, I am sharing a simpler version for those who like a little less orientation.
As with the preppy tree, the block was shrunk to 6-inches. That make it the perfect size for a mini quilt.
The I chose two different fabrics. One was a batik. The other was metallic. These were fused down and secured with a green thread.
The block was quilted using white thread and a specialty stitch. The trick with these is to start at the same height on the block and reset your stitch to the starting position each time.
The decorative stitching on the branches was done with a 12 wt thread. Yes – 12 weight on my domestic machine. I used a 50 wt bobbin thread and a 70 needle. This is a good time to play with those stitches you never use!
Then, I added the binding to match the trunk.
This a great option for those who like a simpler tree.
Which do you like best so far? Preppy or Natural?

I like the the first tree best. I think I’ll use some of my sparkly threads to either hand embroider or use the thread on my machine for a gold chain around the tree. Who knows from there… I love Christmas trees.
I like that idea!! I am going to make more of these tomorrow. I think more beading and embroidery for me too. How about lace?
