When I was a kid, my dad loved taking us to historic places so we could understand where things actually happened. It’s amazing how seeing the place and hearing the stories brings it all to life. I did the same for my own sons. We visited as many historic sites as we could, and one of our favorites was Fort Ticonderoga, tucked into the Adirondack Mountains. Fall was always the best time to go. The leaves were at their most beautiful, and it gave us a good sense of just how chilly things could get, even back then.

Here’s the part I love most. The fort started out French, built in 1755 and named Fort Carillon. The British captured it in 1759 and renamed it Fort Ticonderoga. Then the Americans took it in 1775, in the first American victory of the Revolution. The British recaptured it in 1777. And finally, after the war, it settled into American hands for good. French, British, American, British, American. Five different hands on one small fort. I really do love history.

This medallion quilt is a Block of the Month, built the same way that fort was: one layer at a time, each ring added around the last until the whole thing comes together as something worth defending.
