Subduction

Description

Have you ever travelled in the mountains? When you were there, did you notice the rock formations? Some look like pastries tipped on their edges. In a sense, they are. When the tectonic plates move, one over the other, the rocks on them tip over. Imagine a Jenga on a game board. Then, you try to slide a tray under that game board. Those Jenga pieces topple, just like the rocks in the mountains. The act of one plate sliding under another, like the tray under a game board, is Subduction.

When I was traveling in New Mexico with my husband, these types of rock formations are everywhere! They were the inspiration for one of my latest quilt patterns – Subduction.

Subduction features Banyan’s Heartland Collection. This collection has beautiful teals, greens and browns. Similar to the colors you will see in wooded mountains with clear lakes.

Introduction: Subduction is when one tectonic plate slides under another. The blocks of this look like one block is sliding under another. Pattern can be pieced traditionally or using foundations.
