Description
My paternal grandparents ran a country store — the kind with rocking chairs on the front porch and an old black keyed cash register ringing up the till. But the real draw, for us kids, was the curved glass candy case up front. Underneath it sat crocks of old-fashioned candy: root beer barrels, lemon drops, cinnamon chips, candy sticks, Bit-O-Honeys, Mary Janes, and salt water taffy in every pastel color you could imagine. We learned the color code fast — which shade meant which flavor — and we learned the real trick too: suck on the taffy slowly, and it wouldn’t pull at your fillings or get stuck in your braces the way biting in would. Wisdom passed down one sticky summer at a time.
This quilt is built in that same pastel taffy palette — soft mint pink and a deeper cinnamon pink woven through nesting Sawtooth Star and Economy blocks. Even the shapes cooperate: those pointed, twisting blocks call to mind the little paper wrappers each taffy came twisted up in. As the blocks interlock, a secondary hugs-and-kisses pattern emerges across the quilt, the kind of design that rewards a second look. Confident beginner friendly, with a sweetness that never tips into saccharine.
