Description
Chubby Blossoms. Even the name took me straight back — to smiley faces, painted ladies, and the kind of bold, unapologetic color that defined the late sixties and early seventies. The moment I laid eyes on this Banyan Batiks collection, I knew it needed a quilt with that same fearless energy. Ashbury was born.
The design leans into everything that era did best: big, saturated color floating against generous expanses of creamy negative space, a touch of asymmetry that keeps your eye moving, and that unexpected marriage of curves and clean straight lines. The cornerstone squares tucked at the edges add one more little surprise — there one minute, nearly hidden the next.
The curves come from a classic Drunkard’s Path construction, and the pattern gives you two ways in. Confident with curved piecing? The freezer paper template method makes it approachable, step by step. Prefer to skip the curves altogether? A fusible appliqué option is built right in. Either way, you get the same bold, graphic result.
At 81″ × 81″, Ashbury is the quilt equivalent of a great vintage poster — joyful, graphic, and completely at home in a modern space.
