In college, our dorms were located near Little Italy in Cleveland. You couldn’t beat the Italian food. Of course, as a poor college student, I lived on pasta. Most of all, I remember pulling all-nighters… The reward, other than convincing yourself you could cram anything more in your brain, were fresh Presti’s doughnuts. There was nothing better.

As I got older, I learned to make more flavorful dishes than I could afford in college. But pasta is still one of my favorite dishes, especially with garlic, tomatoes, basil, and rich flavors. In honor of one of my favorite foods, this week’s image is Pasta Prep.

Working with vivid reds, yellow, and oranges can be a challenge in quilts. Getting the balance is key. Too much of any of them would be overpowering.

The yellow is the most eye catching, so you want to spread it around to keep your eyes moving.

Keeping red in the back and at the edges also keeps it from becoming too dominant.

The orange is in the center and relatively equal to the amount of red. Because it is interspersed, it keeps the red and yellow from being too bold.

The green and black provide a nice balance, with the bright colors and neutral shades.

In this image, I added Hoffman’s 884-695 Bumble Bee Batik. The yellow and black design provides a nice border for this bright design.

This design is on my design board as Calendula. It will be coming out later this year.

Trust Yourself with Color! Do you doubt yourself when selecting colors? If you do, pick a photo you like, find the pleasing colors in it. Then, match those colors to fabric. You can then translate those colors into a quilt!

Happy Quilting!
