Quilt Projects and Home Repairs Have More in Common Than You Think

Why is it that we learn our best lessons the hard way?

A week ago, I shared a little progress on the Quilting… You Say? Quilt Along — proudly showing off my first word, “Appliqué.” Before I started adding the second word, “Stencil,” I spotted a grease stain on the fabric. One of the perils of working with white or a solid.

The culprit? I had taken my machine in for servicing and forgotten to wipe it down when I got it home. The service center was wonderful — that part is on me. It’s always the quilter’s responsibility to check for any drips or drabs before stitching. Lesson noted.

So I did what any reasonable quilter would do: a drop of dish soap, gently rubbed in, rinsed with warm water. Once it dried, you could barely see the spot — and with more quilting to come, it would be hidden entirely. Problem solved. Or so I thought.

That’s when I noticed I had placed my lettering on the wrong grid. I needed to shift it over one position. No big deal — I could unpick the stitching and relocate the appliqué. Except that the warm water had wicked the purple dye from the fabric and left its own mark.

Back to the sink. Soap. Warm water. Again.

It didn’t come out 100%, but enough that once the appliqué was repositioned, you’d never know. Crisis averted — twice.

The moral of this story? Quilt projects and home repairs have a lot in common. You start with one thing and discover three more along the way. The best defense is careful planning at the very beginning — before the machine comes home from the shop, before the first stitch goes down, and definitely before the warm water hits the fabric.

Quilt on, friends. We’ve all been there.
