Vertical Gardens

Gardening is included again in my design! This was inspired by some research I did over the summer about vertical gardens.

Vertical gardens are becoming all the rage especially if you have small spaces. You can develop a wall or shelving system to turn a fence or blank wall into a green space. I have a space on the back of my house, where the basement wall is exposed for several feet. It is here that I want to add a vertical garden to hide some of that plain grey mass. Not only will it be pretty, but it is also eco-friendly. It can help keep the temperature of the wall more even.

Before I digress too far, let me get back to the quilt concept! Hoffman provided swatches of their Sweet Breeze Collection, which includes beautiful green batiks, at the same time as I was researching the idea of vertical gardening at my house. Of course, one idea led to another. Why not transfer the vertical garden to fabric?

I took a square Oak Leaf foundation pieced block and modified it to a diamond. These diamond blocks were placed on point with sashing, which looks a bit like lattice work. Then, a used the beautiful greens and tinted batiks to create this Vertical Garden throw.
