My sister was the ballerina. I was the pianist. Sometimes she’d twirl around while I practiced. More often, I’d sit through her practices, listening to Chopin, Liszt, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Ravel, Prokofiev, Debussy, and Bartok. Watching her dance to that amazing music felt like stepping into another life. High school drama just slid away. Along the way, I learned enough ballet vocabulary to know that “relevé” means to lift. And that’s exactly what it did. It lifted my spirits.
