There was a farm across the street from the house where I spent my middle school years. Four horses — a bay, a dun, and a pair of chestnuts — retired and living their best lives, according to my mom. To me they were magnificent. I spent hours picking wildflowers along that fence line, watching them. Mom’s rule was firm: no petting, no feeding, no approaching without permission from the owner. They were big. I was a pixie. And they were not mine to touch.
