Description
I grew up near the forest, and ferns were just part of the scenery — that soft, feathery understory beneath the canopy I walked past a thousand times without a second thought. It wasn’t until years later, on a hike in Maui, that a guide stopped our group beside a patch of fiddleheads and told us the tender young shoots were actually edible — delicious, even. I’d never thought of ferns as anything but backdrop, and suddenly they were something to seek out, something worth noticing. This quilt is my way of finally giving them the spotlight.
Fantastic Fiddlebacks takes those iconic curled fronds and fans them out in bold foundation-pieced rays, radiating from soft celadon centers in a rich, layered palette of deep forest, emerald, and treetop greens. Sixteen fern blocks alternate direction across the quilt, creating a rhythm that reads like sunlight breaking through a canopy — and a stack of six borders builds outward with real presence, giving this queen-size piece the gravity of a true bedroom centerpiece.
