Calliope is the muse of eloquence and epic poetry, but she’s also a musical instrument, the calliope, the loud, cheerful organ you hear at a carnival. This panel is definitely more carnival than poetry.
As kids, we begged to go to the fair. Any fair. Church fair, school fair, book fair, county fair, state fair, even the Renaissance fair. It didn’t matter which one. To us, fairs were pure magic, food and fun everywhere you looked. We rode the rides, prowled the exhibits (the animals especially), and wriggled with delight through every show. My own kids had the same kind of adventures growing up, and watching their faces light up brought all that childhood joy right back.
This quilt has that same carnival energy. A wide-eyed cat, dressed head to toe in a riot of flowers, sits front and center, framed by bold striped borders that feel like they’re straight off the midway.
