The Story Behind My Exclusive Alaskan Quilting Cruise Quilt
Recently, my friends Andi and Tori from Quilting on the Side asked me one of my favorite questions:
“Where do your quilt ideas come from?”
For me, inspiration always starts with a connection — a place, a memory, a cause, an experience. Quilts feel more alive when they’re rooted in something real.
So when I was approached to teach on the 2027 Alaskan Quilting Cruise, I knew immediately that the project needed to be special.
If people are traveling all the way to Alaska to quilt with me, the quilt should reflect the journey itself.
And since this is an exclusive pattern — available only to cruisers — it had to carry the spirit of the place.
No pressure, right? 😉
What Should an Alaskan Quilt Be?
My early ideas were… let’s just say “predictable.”
Nautical motifs? Too generic.
A foundation-pieced coastline? Beautiful, but a bit intense for a relaxed workshop at sea.
A fusible totem? Gorgeous in theory, but fusible appliqué would demand a lot of thread changes, which isn’t ideal for portable cruise setups.
So traditional piecing it was.
But “traditional” doesn’t mean ordinary — not when you let the place itself guide the design.
Chasing Inspiration North
I wanted a quilt that felt rooted in Alaska — not the souvenir-shop version, but the deeper truth of the landscape and the people who live there.
So I started researching the Indigenous communities of Alaska:
Inupiat, Yupik, Tlingit, Athabaskan, and Aleut.
That’s when I rediscovered their extraordinary beadwork.
It’s rhythmic.
It’s geometric.
It’s radiant with color and intention.
It tells stories stitch by stitch.
I knew I could never replicate those designs—and shouldn’t.
But I could honor the structure, the rhythm, the glow.
And that moment became the spark behind the quilt.
Introducing: Northern Slopes
Northern Slopes is a 93″ square quilt created exclusively for the 2027 Alaskan Quilting Cruise.
It reflects Alaska in a deeper way:
🧊 Icy blues echo glacier crevasses
🌙 Midnight blacks mirror the quiet of long northern nights
✨ Golden sparks evoke the sharp light of the Arctic sun
💎 Pieced bead-chain pathways mimic the pulse and precision of traditional beadwork
It doesn’t depict Alaska — it feels like Alaska.
Why This Quilt Is Iconically Alaskan (Without Being Kitsch)
No moose silhouettes.
No appliquéd polar bears.
No souvenir-shop fluff.
Instead, Northern Slopes draws on the three foundations of Alaska’s true visual language:
1. The Dance of Light
Alaska is defined by extremes of light — endless days and endless nights, the glow on ice, and the quiet shimmer of the aurora.
The palette channels that emotional landscape.
2. Rhythm and Repetition
From beadwork to tides, from snowdrifts to seasonal cycles, Alaska moves in patterns.
The quilt echoes that rhythm through repeating chains and star pathways.
3. Spaciousness and Quiet
The North feels vast and meditative.
The deep negative space carries that stillness beautifully.
This quilt doesn’t scream Alaska — it whispers it.
How We’ll Make It on the Cruise
Even though the design looks intricate, we’ll keep the construction relaxing and rhythmic using:
-
strip piecing
-
stitch-and-flip units
-
smart color sequencing
-
pieced “bead chains” that sparkle without fuss
Just the right amount of challenge for stitching between glaciers and scenic views.
Kits will include all the fabric needed for the quilt top and binding (backing and batting not included), using high-quality fabrics curated specifically for this cruise project.
Why This Quilt Matters to Me
Designing Northern Slopes made me feel connected — not just to Alaska, but to the artistry, light, and quiet strength that shape the region.
I wanted the project to be more than a keepsake.
I wanted it to feel like a memory — one you’ll stitch into place and have with you long after the cruise ends.
