Description
Victory at Sea is a quilt pattern inspired by my love of the ocean and naval history. I have always enjoyed the sea—whether sailing on it or simply watching it from shore. The ocean is temperamental, shifting between calm and storm, and that sense of movement and personality has always fascinated me.
In my younger days I was fortunate to learn to sail, and that interest eventually led me to study naval history. From time to time those two interests—history and quilting—come together in my designs. Victory at Sea is one of those quilts.
The center of the quilt is based on the classic Ocean Waves quilt block, a traditional block whose strong triangular piecing echoes the movement of the sea. I simplified the construction slightly to make the block easier to assemble while keeping the bold geometric look that makes it so striking.
Surrounding the center are two historic “victory” blocks: Dewey’s Victory and Hull’s Victory. Admiral George Dewey defeated the Spanish Pacific Fleet at the Battle of Manila during the Spanish-American War, a decisive naval victory that earned him promotion to Admiral of the Navy—the only American to ever hold that rank.
A century earlier, Captain Isaac Hull commanded the USS Constitution during the War of 1812. Under Hull’s leadership the ship defeated HMS Guerriere, earning the legendary nickname “Old Ironsides.” That early victory provided an important morale boost for the young American Navy.
The outer border features Ships at Sea blocks, creating a frame that celebrates the long tradition of naval exploration and the ships that continue to cross the world’s oceans today.
This quilt was originally designed using the beautiful Hoffman Sand and Sky fabric collection, whose blues, greens, and soft tans capture the colors of the sea perfectly.
The finished quilt measures 98″ square, making it a wonderful size for a bed quilt or a striking statement piece.
