I’d heard about bluebirds all my life, but I never actually saw one until I moved to Virginia. We lived out in a rural spot — a patch of woods, a little swamp, some fields, tucked into a remote subdivision. It was a little slice of heaven, and the bluebirds liked to visit. I put up houses for them. I was hoping for the bluebirds of happiness and got sparrows instead, chirping constantly in those houses. Turns out that warmed my heart just as much.
The triangular blocks framing this panel echo the bluebirds’ coloring, blues and rusty oranges stitched right into the corners. It’s a small nod to a beautiful scene, one that still feels like a gift every time it shows up.
