Looking for a masculine color palette? Then, Trinity Library is just for you!

About ten years ago, we took a family vacation to Ireland. As with many immigrants, we longed to see where our families had originated. I had been raised with Irish music, Irish dance, and Irish cooking. What I didn’t have was a trip to the old country to understand more about my family and their history.

We had a whirlwind tour, starting and ending in Dublin. In between, we visited Waterford, Cork, Lismore, the Cliffs of Mohr, and so much more. The weather was dreary. In Scotland, the call it dreich. But it explains why the grass is so green. I guess you have to look at the bright side, even if the sun isn’t shining.

We have wonderful memories, and one was the Trinity Library. At the time, they were displaying the Magna Carta and the Book of Kells. It was incredible to see amazing books that play such a huge role in our history.

I don’t think I was prepared to experience the Long Hall in the Trinity Library. If you are a book lover, you will know what I mean. Stacks and stacks of old leather-bound books. The old, polished wood and marble busts. It was like being in a dream.

But back to quilting, where I have wandered away from in my ramblings. This image of the library and the colors of the wood, leather, and marble are the quintessential colors for a “man’s quilt.”

I could have made the quilt even darker, to match the somber tone of the library, but decided to focus on the books of the library, rather than the architecture.

These colors match the cover and bindings of the books lining the shelves of the library. As you can see, you can pick parts of an image you like. You don’t need to use the whole thing!

In this case, I also added some other fabrics, 885-179 Toast and 247-Juneau to add a little texture to the binding colors. What do you think of these fabrics in the Speck in the Eye quilt?

Do you want to learn a little more about these palettes and how to use them? Stay tuned for more information on an upcoming class!

Happy Quilting!
