For my Sound of Music lovers, I just finished making my Edelweiss block! This was my Quilt Block Mania – June 2024 Block.
The block was designed for fusible applique. But I adapted it to my 3-D applique (Applismith). That made it a little more fun for me. I am really addicted to the technique.
For the coloring of the Edelweiss flower, I tried to keep it somewhat realistic. They are somewhat fuzzy and have gray and/or gold centers. Ok – maybe I used a little artistic license…
If I made it again, I would probably opt for a more muted or dusty green for the leaves.
For the petals, I used metallic fabrics to really make it sparkle (a slight deviation from fuzzy, but not from grey). The two different metallics from Hoffman gave different shades to the petals.
There is a grey fabric for the top petals (which is under the beading). And a buttercup fabric is under the center.
The beading in the center was probably my favorite part. It was my interpretation of the fuzzy centers for the flowers. I started with filigree flower spacers (five silver and one brass). They were tacked down. Around the spacers, I sewed clear bicone beads.
Then, I started weaving beads around the spacers. There are gold and silver colored seed beads, interspersed with pearl-like beads. This is a really fun technique! I kept weaving until I covered the grey petals and center. Then, I wove the petals and center together to make one piece. I would love to teach you some time.
I hope this has given you a little inspiration on how to level up your blocks!
Happy Quilting
