Description
Some quilts start with a pattern. This one started with a scream.
A pair of bald eagles has nested in the 5G tower behind Laureen’s house — close enough to hear them call out as they guard their nest, close enough to watch them launch and bank toward the bay. On the days they’re not visible from the window, they’re hunting the marshes between home and Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, just a few miles down the road. This quilt is for them.
The centerpiece is a breathtaking panel from Elizabeth’s Studio’s Soulmates collection — two bald eagles perched together in that still, watchful way that makes you stop whatever you’re doing and just look. The deep black background feels like early morning, like the moment before the sun clears the horizon. And then the border catches the light.
Those gold and black pieced triangle blocks weren’t chosen at random. They’re meant to capture something specific: the way the sun glints off the Delaware Bay at first light and last light — flashes of gold off the water that you notice from a distance and can’t quite stop watching. Twenty-four pieced triangles, each one a small burst of gold against the black, surrounding the panel like a frame of scattered light.
At 45″ × 63″, Bombay Hook is a confident beginner pattern — the pieced triangles look impressive but come together with straightforward HST construction. A striking gift for any wildlife lover, bird watcher, or anyone who has ever looked up and felt lucky.
