With snow on the ground here in Virginia, it is difficult to think about Earth Day and spring being right around the corner. But it is. Yesterday, I saw a seemingly misguided robin. They usually arrive as the harbinger of spring. This poor guy may have had a compass malfunction or maybe he had it right and spring is coming soon. No offense to the people predicting the weather, but nature’s creatures seem to have a much better instinct for Mother Nature’s whims.
Personally, I am looking forward to a little thaw and being able to hike again with my dogs. They have no problem with the snow and ice, as they were bred for this kind of weather. On the other hand, I am not up for them dragging me into a snowbank or half frozen body of water. They do love their water, frozen or not. Not to mention, Fergus outweighs me by about 4o lbs. and Rigby is quickly catching up. So, for my safety, I am waiting for a little warmer weather before I take the two loveable brutes together for a walk.
I can’t think of a better activity to fill my time, while I wait, than quilting. So why not make a quilt to celebrate Earth Day? August Wren has even created a fabric just for this occasion, Dear Stella’s Earth Day collection. The fabrics in this collection have such wonderful prints, I wanted to use large blocks to show them off. I also wanted to link the blocks to the theme. The result was Sustain, a quilt with alternating blocks – Earth block, which is a fusible applique circle, and Around the World block, which is traditional piecing. The combination makes a quick and easy throw quilt, measuring 76″ square.
